Worshipping Through Song

Worship is the biblical response to who God is. God has been revealed to us in the Person of Jesus Christ. God is One God in three distinct Persons – God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. We see in Revelation 4:8 angels crying out day and night, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” This heavenly worship of the Trinity, revealed through three exclamations of the word holy, suddenly erupts and spills over in Revelation 5 when those worshipping turn towards the Lamb. The Lamb of God is suddenly focused on as the One Who has made it possible through His shed blood to enter into this heavenly worship that is erupting. Jesus is the reason anyone is able to worship God. Jesus is the One who has made us righteous through the purchase of His shed blood. He has made us able to respond in our hearts to God in worship, ascribing to Him His worthiness as God. That is what worship is. It is ascribing to God His worthiness as our Savior from the heart. This worship takes on various forms. So when we talk about worship music through song we are not talking about form or style but about the posture of our hearts in response towards the cross of Christ. God’s Spirit is only in our worship when Christ is the central focus of our hearts as we sing. When we focus on the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world we are worshipping God in spirit and in Truth!
