Easter Eggs are a huge tradition this time of year. Everything from real dyed eggs to Cadbury eggs to those awesome terribly addictive Star-Burst jellybean eggs - line the shelves of our stores. Decorating eggs for Easter is a tradition that dates to at least the 13th century. Between Roman Catholic and Orthodox traditions, no one seems to be able to decide what symbolism the egg holds, but it looks like a no-brainer to me. You have a living thing closed in a hard shell that appears lifeless. In time though, the life inside bursts out of the shell for all to see. Sound familiar?
But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. 5 And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “ Lk 24:1–5
They went to the tomb expecting to find Jesus' lifeless body. Yep, they were sure He was dead, so much so that they were prepared to embalm Him. Upon arrival, they found the huge stone rolled away from the tomb, so they went in to see what was going on, but there was no body to be found. They have no idea what to think - perplexed is the word used here. Just then, a couple of angels appear next to them and they have a message: "Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but
has risen. Lk 24:5-6 I love it… "Why do you seek the living among the dead?" Tombs are for dead people and so Jesus is NOT here! Don’t you remember what He said (over and over and over again) to you? "Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 7 that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” 8 And they remembered his words… Lk 24:6-8 There is the Gospel - the power of God for salvation. Ro 1:16 Christ died for sins and was raised. They had come to the tomb looking to honor a good dead man - but NOW they remembered His words- He said this would happen… He is not a good dead man but a great living God… He is alive!
Take a moment now to worship the living Christ.
